Bandai Atami Onsen called “Hagihime-no-yu”

History of Bandai Atami Onsen

It is said that Bandai Atami Onsen was founded in the Kamakura era, about 800 years ago. A legend about Hagihime as follows has been handed down to the present day. In the era of Northern and Southern Courts, a beautiful princess of a court noble in Kyoto was suffering from a fatal disease. One night she received a divine message from Cetaka saying “Go to the northeast, past hundreds of rivers. At the very 500th river bank, there you’ll find a holy spring. Bathe in the spring and you’ll recover from the illness.” The Princess left Kyoto with Yukie, her maid, went through many hardships and finally reached the 500th river which is the current location of the Bandai Atami Hot Spring Resort. She bathed in the hot spring, got over the fatal disease and went back to Kyoto in gratitude. After that, Bandai Atami Onsen became famous as a hot spring to make women beautiful. Nowadays, the place is popular as the deep interior of Koriyama, and attracts people heading for Bandai Kogen as well as Aizu.
